Our Fixer Upper: Master Bedroom Reveal

May 9, 2018

Wow.

I just realized it’s about to be a year since we moved in to our house. At the time, the house was far from being done. We basically didn’t have a kitchen and were missing a few details like the barn door in our closet, the actual closet rods, and some light fixtures. We had been working tirelessly the last few weeks and even though we didn’t have a move-in ready home, we were ready to live there. If working nights and weekends wasn’t enough.. we had to drive back and forth from our apartment that was about 25 minutes away. So yes, we were ready, to say the least!

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of having Mia and Francel, from West Elm Dallas & Plano visit us and take pictures of our home (super cool, right?!) I am beyond pleased with how the pictures turned out and even more excited that Mia was nice enough to let me use them! So obviously, I wanted to share them with you guys!! With the exception of the “before” pics, every picture on here was taken by Mia Blessinger (click on her name to access IG).

The bedroom is done and it’s perfect. I couldn’t be more happy with how it turned out. As you may recall from my previous posts, click –> (fixer upper 1 & 2), we turned two bedrooms into one and closed the hall access to the (previously) guest bathroom, to make it our master bath. Basically every inch of our bedroom space was carefully planned out. From the color of the accent wall to the position of the window. Want details? Read on..

The accent wall

Long before we even bought our house, before our wedding actually, I fell in love with the image on the left (below). It inspired the design of our headboard, which by the way was a wedding gift from a family friend that makes custom furniture.. (if you want his info, let me know). The headboard alone is beautiful, but I thought, why not recreate the look that I fell in love with in the first place? It didn’t take much convincing for my husband to agree and so we started looking at the different shades of moody dark blues. We went with the color Naval from Sherwin Williams, which is different than the one we have in the kitchen/dining space. I’d say the color was perfect for the mood we were creating. It’s a dark blue with greyish tones, so it’s not the exact color of the fabric on the headboard, but complements it well.

The Barn Door

We chose to get a barn door for our closet for two reasons: it’s stylish and saves space. The room is not huge, so we wanted to minimize wasted space as much as possible. Meaning, a sliding door was the perfect answer to this.. and it works as an accent piece in our room, so win win. We got the door at Builders Surplus at a fairly discounted price. I’m pretty sure it was around $90, which is a fair price for a wooden door! They have other types of doors in various sizes so it might take a few trips to the store if you’re looking for a specific type of door. The hardware we used is from Amazon (I’ll link everything I can at the end of this post). It was black, and I honestly was not crazy about it, so I looked into other ideas and ended up spray painting the hardware gold! It was super easy and I’d say it worked out pretty well. The only down side to spray painting hardware is that it might get scratched over time and will be visible, but honestly we didn’t mind. To keep things cohesive, we painted the door the same color of the rest of the doors.

The Window

So initially there were two windows in the room, both in awkward places, so we decided to get rid of one and expand the other. The one we removed was directly where we wanted our bed to be, so if we had kept it, we wouldn’t be able to have the layout we wanted. The other window was tiny and like I said, awkward. Honestly, though, we were unsure of what to do with the window. So when our contractor offered us a spare window he had, which was the perfect size for the wall that window was already in, we went for it! The window he gave us was huge and took up almost the entire top half of the wall, hello natural light!

Other Décor Pieces

The chair caught my eye the second I saw it sitting on the floor of an antique store. It was so cool but I was unsure of how it would fit with the rest of our décor. I swear I must have gone to look at it a dozen times (at least two of those times with my husband), until one day it wasn’t there anymore! Okay, it was at the store, but not in the same spot! I nearly cried. I thought someone had taken the chair and my chances of having a cool antique mid century style chair were gone. Okay, I’m being super dramatic, but long story short, we took the chair, no questions. It fit perfectly in our bedroom, along with the poster we hung right above it. The poster actually came with a Kanye West vinyl album. Aside from hanging it up because we enjoy his music, we loved how well the colors complemented the rest of the décor. Lastly, I want to talk about the sconces next to each side of our bed. I feel like finding the right ones was one of the hardest task I had to deal with. Even though I knew early on I didn’t want lamps, I wasn’t sure if I wanted pendant lights (hung from the ceiling), or sconces (mounted to the wall). For pendant lights, I would have needed to decide early on so the plug needed could be installed with the rest of the electrical wiring of the house. This is one of those things that obviously can be done after installing the walls.. but why make things harder, ya know? So ultimately I decided on sconces and started looking around for ones that a) matched the rest of the décor b) the husband liked c) were a reasonable price. Let me tell you it is not easy to find some that match all three points, but I did it! I found them at West Elm (online) and they were actually on sale, so a reasonable price. I swear I look elsewhere, but almost always end up shopping at West Elm! 🙂
