how to wear joggers to work

October 3, 2017

I love wearing comfortable clothes, but who doesn’t right? I also like to look sharp and not at all like a slob, which can be tough to figure out when choosing what to wear for work. I’m a high school teacher, so as you may imagine, I have to work extra hard to look my age and not like one of the students (sad face). I’m also on my feet all day and running around so staying comfy is a must for me. Although, I must admit I like to wear heels as often as my feet allow it. I know, I know, why do I wear heels when I just said I like being comfortable? Remember I also said I like to look sharp!

This is my effortless comfy-sharp look (did I just make up a word?). It’s a go-to for anyone that likes to keep things simple and cute. I spotted joggers for the first time a couple of years ago at Jcrew and realized I could totally wear them to work. There are different types of joggers available at the store. The ones I wear to work are not the type you wear to work out or go to sleep, so please don’t wear those to work! I don’t care how cute they are! The appropriate joggers are usually made with the same type of fabric regular work pants are made of. They might also just be called drawstring pants. Either way, they are comfy as heck, and are stretchy at the waist, so that’s definitely a plus.

Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind when wearing comfortable pants to work:

Wear a blouse

These pants are so versatile you could also wear a v-neck and sneakers with them to create a sporty look. BUT I’d recommend to stay away from the sporty look for work. You want to create a balance and wearing a nice blouse with the joggers does exactly that. Whether the blouse is a button down or a silk top, make sure it says “professional”.

Pay attention to the shoes

A pet peeve of mine is seeing a lovely dress or pant/shirt combo with the wrong pair of shoes. Oh, it breaks my heart. You might think no one is looking at your shoes, but believe me, we are. Specially when you nail the top portion of your outfit. So, what I’ve learned in the 5 years I’ve been at my job, is to invest in a few pairs of neutral shoes. I have 2 pairs of pumps and a few flats that I wear regularly to work. I have beige and black pumps, along with other fun colors, but the black or beige are always my go-to. Same with the flats. I have paired joggers (or drawstring pants) with pumps and flats, and both look great! It really all depends on how my feet are feeling that day. 🙂

Keep accessories minimal

I actually go by this rule on a daily. I keep my accessories to a minimum because I like focusing on my clothing pieces. If the outfit looks good, there is no need to draw attention elsewhere. Sometimes, however, a pair of earrings is all you need to pull the look together. In this case, I added some statement earrings because the rest of the outfit was super simple. There is no other pattern or statement piece to compete with the earrings.

ps. I think statement earrings are totally in right now

Some of the pieces I’m wearing are not available at the store anymore, but I will link similar pieces anyway! (Click on the name of each)
