Entryway at Mom’s House

June 15, 2020

Last year my parents decided to update their home. They got all new hardwood floors and changed the stone on their fireplace. This, of course, called for new furniture and wall art! My mom suggested I take on their home as a project and help her pick all the new items they were planning on purchasing. I was ecstatic. You mean I get to pick out everything going into your home? I’m in! At this time I was beginning to fantasize with having a career as an interior designer. I had tackled the renovations and decor of my own home and was in love with the entire process! What could go wrong? It’s my parents after all.. Err.. wrong! Had it really been that long since I last lived under the same roof as my dad? He is the absolute worst client any designer could ask for! He will have you spend countless hours planning the space, color scheme, etc. and end up buying whatever he wants! Which is exactly what happened. Anyway, my mom did the best she could while they browsed the furniture stores and later sent me a “hey…. so we bought the couch.. and dining table… and coffee table” text along with the pictures of the furniture. Long story short, my dad lost interest in the details of the living area as soon as he bought the big items, so my mom and I decided to proceed with our plans! So you can definitely expect more on my mom’s home, but for now I wanted to share what we did with her entryway.

When you walk into the house, the first thing you notice is the high ceiling in the main living area and the stairway leading up to the second floor. Once you’re inside and close the main door, this is what you see. Or what we used to see. There’s nothing wrong with the space and it might even feel like there doesn’t need to be anything there. However, the space is empty and when you look at that wall, your instinct might be to just look at the stairs. So why not make use of the space and have something pretty to look at?

What the entryway/foyer looked like before..
What it looks like now! (This was a quick pic I took when I installed the table and mirror)

I measured the space and took into consideration the main door when open. I wanted a table we could decorate with accessories. I might add that this is purely decorative, but if my mom wanted to, she could add baskets to store pillows and blankets at the bottom. She could also have a tray for keys and every day items.. like masks. Another idea I originally had was to have a mounted mirror with a small floating shelf underneath. However, I quickly went back to the table because, again, space! We want the furniture to feel like it fits perfectly in this large living space!

This is the final product of my mom’s entryway. I’m very pleased with how the table and mirror turned out. She didn’t want to spend a fortune on this space that is purely decorative, so we budgeted and used a few things she already had in her home.

I have linked everything we purchased and a few other similar items. I would love to know what you think!

Thanks for reading <3
